Web Cam Security

Updated: Oct 10, 2019

If you're concerned about the safety and security of your webcam, rather than putting a piece of tape over it, why not disable it? It’s less messy and you don’t have to peel off the tape every time you want to use it!

Windows 10 Users

1. Right click on the Windows Start button in the bottom left hand corner of your screen and choose Device Manager from the menu.

2. In the list of devices look for Cameras or Imaging devices and click on it to expand.

3. Right-click on the name of your camera (It will be called something like VGA WebCam or Integrated Webcam) and choose to Disable device.

There you go, all done. The next time you want to use your webcam, simply follow these steps again and choose Enable from the menu.

Mac Users

If you're a Mac user, it can be a bit more complicated if you want to disable your webcam altogether but there are free apps that allow you to monitor and block unwanted webcam and microphone access.

The app I use and recommend is OverSight from Objective-See. You can download it here.

Scroll down the product list and click on the green umbrella to download the app and then install it from your Downloads folder.

Once OverSight is installed and running it will will alert you whenever your webcam or microphone is accessed and give you the option to block or allow it. It's a great little Mac security tool and it's free.

Hope this helps!
